In 1981, a massive volcanic eruption forced the evacuation of every resident on Pagan Island, a remote U.S. territory in the Northern Mariana Islands. More than four decades later, the island remains officially unresettled — no infrastructure, no government services, no permanent population. And yet people have returned anyway, at times living entirely alone for months, cut off from electricity, internet, and regular contact with the outside world, on a volcano that is still, geologically speaking, very much alive.
