OpenAI just dropped 722 AI-written math papers on GitHub, claiming 372 new results, four weeks after someone dared it to "solve a few more" Millennium Prize problems. We open the box: a sum that explodes at 355, a 1961 shape that settles a 76-year-old coloring question, multiplication made faster by a margin with 52 zeros, a cliff in a 57-year-old record, a bite out of the Riemann hypothesis, and the fight between mathematicians and the internet that followed. Some of it is Lean-checked; almost none of it is peer reviewed yet. Every claim is attributed to the people who made it. ⏱ Chapters 0:00 The dare 1:27 How we got here: the Navier–Stokes fight 6:51 What's in the box 8:14 The sum that explodes at 355 12:14 Multiplication's speed limit 15:45 Coloring the plane 20:52 The brick factory 23:49 The cliff 26:14 The big ones: Riemann, Erdős, Hilbert 30:22 What it means 31:37 Mathematicians vs. the internet 33:20 Maggot sludge and The Book 📚 Sources (accessed Oct 6–8, 2026) github.com/openai/math (README, CONTENTS, preprints, Lean, reasoning summaries) OpenAI: "Sharing AI progress in mathematics" (Oct 6) · "On the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem" (Sep 8, updated Sep 10) Tristan Buckmaster's statement (cims.nyu.edu/~tristanb/statement.pdf) · posts on X by Bubeck, Altman and Alpöge (Sep 8) Quanta Magazine (Sep 8; Oct 7, "Unique Games") · Scientific American (Sep 21) · Clay Mathematics Institute (Sep 11) mathandai.org (Sep 11) · agmai.org · ahmath.org/statements (Oct 7) Fei, Minzer & Wang, ECCC TR26-179 · Hardy, A Mathematician's Apology (1940) · Turán, J.
