Sometimes politicians know who the real players are in government. Take this week, for example. Emmanuel Jean-Michel Frédéric Macron, President of France and, apparently, a man who knows how government actually works, arrived in Britain on Thursday with his wife, Brigitte. Naturally, we rolled out the red carpet for them. Literally, there are few things humans enjoy more than putting expensive fabric on the ground and then walking very carefully over it. They arrived at my residence, and Brigitte, having crossed the threshold of my famous front door- still no cat flap, despite years of perfectly reasonable requests- immediately asked to see me. Well. I must have been napping. Or having breakfast. Or possibly elevenes. Whatever the reason, I had received no email informing me of this important diplomatic engagement. So there I was, entirely unaware that the First Lady of France was wandering around Downing Street asking for the most important person in the building. There was no welcoming committee. No ceremonial fish. Not even a bowl of something vaguely salmon-based. Things are beginning to slip here. I blame Bambi. He’s spending far too much time up North. Now, I have always had a soft spot for Monsieur Macron, ever since he had the good sense to make an observation about me to my old manservant last year. Caught on camera, he remarked: “He’s the most popular person in Downing Street!” He was, of course, referring to me. There was a pleasing little moment when poor old Keir stood there with that sheepish grin humans adopt when someone has accidentally stated an uncomfortable truth. It is reassuring when international leaders recognise these things. It saves me having to explain them. Anyway, back to Thursday. Brigitte, apparently unable to find me despite the obvious lack of a cat flap, asked: “Just a regret: Larry? Where is the cat?” And then Emmanuel chipped in: “Yeah, is Larry available? I hope he’s not in the British Museum.” Cheeky devil. You can go off humans very quickly, can’t you? Although, to be fair, the British Museum is quite comfortable. Warm and quiet. I may consider it.
