SCBA ELECTIONS ‎Pakistan’s powerful lawyers body Supreme Court Bar Association is going to elect its new president and other office bearers today. The association sprung to international fame with its historical lawyers movement that ousted General Pervez Musharraf and restored over 60 top judges removed by the General through an extra constitutional order which resulted in him being convicted and sentenced to death for high treason. But now the bar association is lead by a lawyers group named after the late but famous human rights lawyer Asma Jehangir which supports the current military backed government that has taken control of judiciary through the controversial 27th constitution amendment. ‎In today’s elections Asma Jehangir group now also known as Ahsan Bhoon group, has nominated Advocate Amjad Ali Shah for presidency to compete with veteran lawyer leader and opposition senator Advocate Hamid Khan’s group who has nominated Sardar Aman for the post. The elections have been marred by allegations of fake legal education testimonials of Amjad Ali Shah and his group leader Ahsan Bhoon. Both deny the allegations with Bhoon also filing defamation suit against the accuser Capt retd Safdar, the husband of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. ‎The lawyers are basically divided over what Hamid Khan group says demonic 27th constitutional amendment that has destroyed judicial independence while Ahsan Bhoon group openly supports the same. ‎Most of the Supreme Court lawyers, about 4600 now, have also been financially engaged with a sprawling lawyers housing project being developed in capital Islamabad that has now been handed over to the military run defense housing authority (DHA) under an MoU signed by Ahsan Bhoon group. Individual lawyers’ about 10 years old one time original investment come to be over Rs 5 million now whereas the market price has skyrocketed to 50 to 60 million rupees after the taking over of the project by the DHA.
