Nothing in Elden Ring explicitly confirms a betrothal between them. But when you look at Ranni's status as an Empyrean, the Dark Moon Ring, Carian marriage traditions, the Church of Vows, Godwyn's position within the Golden Order, and the strange symmetry of the Night of the Black Knives, a disturbing possibility emerges: Godwyn may have been the lord intended to stand beside Ranni if she succeeded Queen Marika. In this lore investigation, I examine why the Erdtree and the Moon had already been united through marriage once before, why Godwyn fits the political role of Ranni's potential consort, and why his death may have meant more than simply providing the other half of Ranni's ritual. But there is a major problem with the theory: no item, dialogue, monument, or character ever actually says Ranni and Godwyn were betrothed. So what if this was never supposed to be a romance? What if Godwyn represented an office - the lord chosen for an Empyrean whose future was already being shaped by the Two Fingers? And if so, the Night of the Black Knives may have destroyed more than Godwyn's soul and Ranni's body. It may have destroyed an entire planned succession.
