Tomiya Kannon in Ibaraki Prefecture preserves many valuable historical structures. Among them, the three-story pagoda, built in 1465, is particularly noteworthy. Enshrined inside it is an Eleven-Headed Kannon statue, which is said to have been carved during the Heian period (794–1192).
Even today, many old temples remain in this area, and foundation stones of temples from the Nara period (710–794) have also been discovered. The last three photographs were taken at the ruins of a Nara-period temple (Niihari Temple Site).
The “manji” (卍) symbol on the door of the main hall originates from India as a Buddhist symbol, and in Japan it is also used as a map marker to indicate temples. It is unrelated to the German symbol.
