Special Event: Hultsfred Festival ‘94
Now with a black eye in tow, Noel and the rest of the group head to Sweden for the Hultsfred Festival. This is the first of two festival appearances the band would do during August, and it’s captured on a great-sounding soundboard recording which has been bootlegged many a time. During this time they began to get back on tour, the band released their third single, Live Forever. It has been described by Noel numerous times that it was the song that ‘made the difference’ as it was the band’s breakthough hit in many territories, and has since become one of their most well-known songs. Also tonight, live favourites Columbia and Slide Away seemingly make their debut on the tour tonight. Columbia would remain opener for the next month of touring, after which Rock N’ Roll Star would make it’s grand debut to the masses. Slide Away would stay sandwiched between Up In The Sky and Cigarettes And Alcohol for the majority of the tour. Liam fumbles a couple words in Fade Away tonight, and has a sore throat too, which leads to various vocal problems (the end of Slide Away sounds particularly sore). Noel as well is a bit sloppy for the first part of the set, but soon gets to grips and does a very nice solo in Digsy’s Dinner, and including his Cigarettes And Alcohol references he even plays the riff of D’Yer Wanna Be A Spaceman before Live Forever, the first instance of it being played live.
As a sidenote, The Verve were playing at this festival too so Noel and Liam joined The Verve onstage as they played a version of their song ‘The Rolling People’, which was still yet to be released. Oasis had supported them on their late 1993 UK Tour, and were the band they were going to support in Amsterdam earlier in 1994 had the ‘ferry incident’ not happened. They would remain very close throughout both band’s existences.
