Quatre kilomètres de quais illuminés, le casino, les yachts, puis le château de Chillon seul sur son rocher.    • raw video Montreux la nuit — du Casino au ...   The Montreux quays run along Lake Geneva as one continuous line of light: palm trees, flower beds, sculptures, and the Belle Époque palace hotels facing the water. From above at night the whole shoreline reads as a drawing — a bright edge between black water and black mountain, with the casino as the densest knot of light in the frame. The marinas add their own geometry: pontoons in straight rows, white hulls and masts sitting in lit water. Then the flight goes east, past Territet and Veytaux, to the castle. Château de Chillon sits on an oval limestone rock pushing out into the lake. Instead of the square plan typical of Savoyard castles, it follows the shape of the rock: roughly 110 metres long by 50 metres wide, the keep rising 25 metres, twenty-five buildings arranged around three courtyards behind a double wall. One side faces a cliff, the other deep water. From the landward side it reads as a fortress; from the lake, as a residence. Lit at night, it is the only bright object for a long way in any direction. The casino here is a rebuild — the original burned down in December 1971, during a Frank Zappa concert, and Deep Purple wrote Smoke on the Water about the smoke crossing this lake.
