The boy walks out, but the boy don't come back. "Where the Fire Burns Low" is a dark Americana ballad about the night the old men wake a thirteen-year-old boy, walk him out to the fire, and hand him five hard truths: life is hard, you ain't that important, it ain't about you, you ain't in control, and you're gonna die. Decades later, he's the old man by the fire, waking his own grandson by name. The video is a scratchboard, white lines cut out of black. Every image is a still. Nothing moves except the blade that cuts each scene in, the fire that burns it away, and the embers that carry the light from one scene to the next: from a winter homestead to the Milky Way, and on to a dawn cut into the board itself.
