Storm Austen, the first named storm of the season, swept across southern England overnight and into Friday 23 October. As it passed along the south coast, a large section of the remains of Brighton's West Pier collapsed into the sea.
In Cornwall and Devon, an amber "danger to life" wind warning ran from 1 a.m. to 10 a.m. By mid-morning more than 18,000 homes in the south-west were without power, according to National Grid. Gusts reached 76 mph at St Mary's on the Isles of Scilly and 84 mph in the Channel Islands, where schools were closed under a red warning. Loganair cancelled 18 flights, GWR trains terminated at Plymouth, and waves battered Torcross on the South Devon coast.
Scotland faces a day of heavy rain, and Storm Boelo follows on Saturday with an amber wind warning for Northern Ireland.
