📖 Buy the book: "Before You Land in Japan" : 37 years at the concierge desk, every question a first trip asks → https://marikoaono.com Somebody your own age came back from Japan, and you asked how it was. There was a pause. "Oh, it was wonderful." Then: "It was harder than we expected." Then they changed the subject. Here's why nobody tells you what they meant: almost everyone making Japan travel videos is in their twenties, and the stairs cost them nothing. So here are seven honest reasons not to travel to Japan over 50, the ones I watched go wrong from behind a Tokyo concierge desk for 37 years. Six of them have an answer, and I hand it to you with the reason. The seventh does not. In this video: 7️⃣ You will walk much further than you think, with nowhere to sit 6️⃣ The stairs, and what the official elevator number doesn't tell you 5️⃣ The summer, and why I have to be blunt about it 4️⃣ Japan is more crowded than it has ever been 3️⃣ The one that surprises Americans at dinner 2️⃣ Nobody will tell you when you get it wrong 1️⃣ The one I cannot fix THE SIX FIXES, IN SHORT: · Two places a day, not five, and sit down every 90 minutes before you need to. Department stores have rest areas and free restrooms on nearly every floor. · Never carry luggage through a station. Send your suitcase ahead from the hotel for about $20 to $30. · On every platform, look for the elevator symbol before you follow the crowd. · Go late October into early December, late March into April, or the second half of May. · Famous places at opening time, rest in the middle of the day, back out at five. · Eat your important meal at lunch. · Learn five rules before you go: shoes off at the door, wash before the bath, train manners, toilet slippers stay in the toilet, money goes in the little tray. Chapter 1 of my book, "What Japan Asks of You", is the one I'd most like you to read. Chapter 21 covers sending your luggage ahead. Tell me in the comments which of these seven would have caught you out, and whether you're still going. I read every single one. And if you're planning this trip with someone who already has fifteen places on the list, send them this video. #JapanTravel #TravelOver50 #JapanTips
