Nearly seven hundred years ago, the traveller Ibn Battuta described a Swahili island town on the East African coast. Today Mombasa is Kenya's second city and its door to the sea, home to one of the largest and busiest ports in East and Central Africa, a fort that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and beaches on its doorstep.
Our verdict comes first: Mombasa is one of the most rewarding cities in Africa to live in. Then we ask how people really live in its three cities in one: a beachfront city of villas and hotels in Nyali and Shanzu, a busy middle-class city of flats and offices in places like Tudor and Bamburi, and a working city of crowded estates in Changamwe, Jomvu, Kisauni and Likoni. What do they earn, what do they pay, what do they eat, and what do they do when the sun goes down?
Which city should we visit next: Kampala, Dar es Salaam or Kigali? Tell us in the comments.
