Home Is Where You Are was written last year after I received a call from Ruth Smith, the wife of one of my closest friends, asking if I could write a song for her husband’s 40th birthday. At that point, I hadn’t really written anything since losing my parents in 2023. It had been a difficult time, and I’d more or less stepped away from songwriting. Ruth sent me words, memories, ideas and little pieces of their life together. As I read through them, they reminded me of lyrics and thoughts I had written a few years earlier for a song for my brother and his wifes wedding. I started bringing those ideas together — Ruth’s memories and words, along with some of my own older lyrics — then rearranged and reshaped them to fit a completely new song. About a week later, Home Is Where You Are came to life. I’ll always be grateful to Ruth for trusting me with something so personal, and for believing in me at a time when I’d almost given up on writing. Sometimes all it takes is one person giving you a reason to pick the guitar and a pen back up again.
