This is my rendition of Anna Bolena's final aria, "Al dolce guidami," from Gaetano Donizetti's tragic opera Anna Bolena (1830). In this devastating scene, Anne Boleyn — imprisoned in the Tower of London and awaiting execution — retreats into her memories. She sings not of her crown or her fall, but of her childhood home, the green plane trees, and a brook that still murmurs with the sighs of her youth. The aria is a moment of quiet, heartbreaking delirium: Anne's mind wanders as she prepares to meet the executioner's ax. Donizetti, a master of bel canto, wrote music here that is both exquisitely beautiful and emotionally raw. The English horn that accompanies the opening melody gives the scene an almost unbearable tenderness. Notably, Donizetti borrowed the opening theme of this aria from his own early opera Enrico di Borgogna (1818), where the melody represented "a voice of love" soothing a troubled soul — a meaning that returns with devastating irony in Anne's final moments. Singing this aria is a journey into the heart of a woman who has lost everything but her memories. I hope you feel the weight of that loss in every phrase.
