This is my rendition of Iolanta's Arioso, "Why have I never known" (Отчего это прежде не знала), from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's final opera, Iolanta (1892) .
In this poignant arioso, Iolanta — a blind princess who has been sheltered her entire life — experiences a moment of profound awakening. She sings of a strange, inexplicable longing that she cannot name, a sadness she has never felt before, and a vague sense of something missing. It is a deeply emotional and vulnerable piece about discovering the world through feelings rather than sight.
I chose to sing this in its original Russian, as the language carries the specific weight and texture that Tchaikovsky intended for this character. Singing Iolanta's journey of discovering light and love is always a privilege.
Composer: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Opera: Iolanta, Op. 69 (1891–1892)
Aria: Iolanta's Arioso ("Why have I never known")
Libretto: Modest Tchaikovsky (based on Henrik Hertz's play King René's Daughter)
Original Russian (excerpt):
Отчего это прежде не знала
Ни тоски я, ни горя, ни слёз,
И все дни протекали, бывало,
Среди звуков небесных и роз?
English Translation (excerpt):
Why have I never known
Neither sorrow, nor grief, nor tears,
And all days passed, as they did,
Among heavenly sounds and roses?
