Pak Ship Sinking? Khawaja Asif Raises Alarm Over Bureaucrats Exodus To Portugal

Pakistan may be sinking, and the first to sense it may be its own elite. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has raised the alarm over what he calls a bureaucratic exodus, accusing senior officers of arranging to settle in Canada, the United States, Britain and Europe while still serving the state. He singled out Portugal, claiming influential officials have prepared their families and finances for relocation, and asked whether they are truly loyal to Pakistan or merely in transit. It is not his first charge: in August 2025, he alleged that over half of the senior bureaucracy had bought property or sought citizenship there. Meanwhile, GDP growth is 3.65 percent, external debt is 137.55 billion dollars and reserves cover two months of imports. The government has published no verified list of those allegedly leaving.
