Every collectible tells a story. Here’s the story of this one.
This archive comes from Warner Bros. still photographer Mac “Julian” Saugstad and documents the making of The Old Man and the Sea through original working photographs, contact sheets, contact strips, candid images, and production material from the 1956–57 filming period.
The photographs follow Ernest Hemingway, Spencer Tracy, and the production team through Cuba and Cabo Blanco, Peru, as they worked to capture the big-game fishing footage that gave the film its physical reality.
Among the most compelling pieces is a real-photo postcard Mac Julian mailed from Peru in May 1956. It shows Julian with Hemingway, Mary Hemingway, and members of the expedition beneath an enormous marlin, with Julian writing home about catches weighing 730 and 750 pounds.
Elsewhere in the archive, Hemingway appears barefoot in the fighting chair, examining heavy fishing tackle, standing beside giant marlin, and working around the crew as cameras were positioned and fishing sequences were staged and filmed.
One group of 40 surviving contact-proof strips contains roughly 270 sequential exposures, giving a remarkably detailed look at the production as it unfolded.
The archive remained with Mac Julian’s family after his long career at Warner Bros., where he worked on major Hollywood productions including The Adventures of Robin Hood, Sergeant York, To Have and Have Not, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Key Largo, and The Spirit of St. Louis.
For Britannic Auctions, this is exactly the kind of material we enjoy researching and representing: not just recognizable names and famous films, but archives where provenance, working photographs, annotations, and surviving groups of material help explain how the finished movie came together.
The Mac Julian Old Man and the Sea archive is live now in our current auction. Full lot descriptions and bidding information are available through Britannic Auctions.
