Welcome to one of our favorite trails in the world! This easy 7.3 mile out and back in Madison County follows an old rail road line down the pristine Laurel River that terminates at the French Broad River. You can enjoy this classic trail, take a dip in clean water and see the ghost town remains of the old Runion Saw Mill.
First, we drive through the town of Marshall where we remember the scene from two years ago. Hurricane Helene submerged Main Street under 7 feet of water and mud. Thankfully, the town has bounced back. We pick up breakfast at Zuma Coffee before heading to the trail.
The Laurel River Trail is a relaxing out-and-back trail that follows the breath-taking Laurel River on an old railroad bed. This is an excellent hike that is easy and fun for the whole family. There are many peaceful spots along the trail to access the river and cool off.
We encountered a humongous orb weaver spider before turning around at the river. We get surprised by a forest fairy and see two snakes on the way, one snake that was actively eating a mouse. We enjoyed a cold plunge and dog zooms at the very end.
This is a popular trail so plan your trip accordingly to beat the crowds! There are sections of this hike that are extremely rocky and rooty. Despite the trail being very flat you will need to pay attention to where you’re stepping. The first mile of the hike is on private property so please be respectful, stay on the trail and please do not litter.
