A pencil study after Portrait of a Girl by Michiel Sweerts, painted around 1660. This painting is often discussed in connection with the tradition of the tronie—17th-century studies of faces and expressions that were not necessarily intended to represent an identifiable person. Rather than being a conventional commissioned portrait, the work allowed Sweerts to explore the human face, expression, light, and character. What makes this painting especially fascinating is its quiet and intimate character. The girl looks away from the viewer, creating a sense that her attention has been caught by something outside the frame. The KMSKA has highlighted the sensitivity of Sweerts's depiction and his remarkable use of very soft light, which has sometimes been compared to the subtle lighting associated with Vermeer. For me, studying this work in pencil is an opportunity to explore the structure of the face, subtle changes of light and shadow, and the expressive power of a simple gaze. Studying the works of the Old Masters is always an inspiring and educational experience.
