Cranefly Larva
HOOK: Curved nymph hook (Dai Riki 285 #8, TMC 200R, MFC 7231) THREAD: 140d, brown or olive WEIGHT: .025 lead, centered TAIL: bugger marabou olive. RIB: monofilament, 3x or larger ABDOMEN (filler): ultra chenille/worm yarn standard, worm brown SHELLBACK: Scudback, 1/4 “, light brown ABDOMEN: Arizona Synthetic Dubbing, Light Peacock
Substitutions: a 3xl straight hook will work fine. Useful sizes range from 6 down to 12. Colors can vary from olive to brown to tan. Crawfish dubbing is a good substitute for the Arizona Synthetic Dubbing. Clear ThinSkin or other vinyl, or even clear bags cut into strips, can serve as the shellback
Fishing Tips: Classic advice is fish them after a rainstorm when the larva are washed from shoreline sod or turf. The aquatic versions are always available. Vigorous kick-screening in small cobble will nearly always loosen a few craneflies if you want a clue on size and color for your waters.
