In 1967, an American artillery battery fired at enemy soldiers fifteen metres from its own guns, with a shell that turned into 8,000 steel darts.
Fire Support Base Gold, Tay Ninh Province. The Viet Cong were through the wire and inside grenade range, and normal artillery was useless that close. The answer was a classified round the gunners called Beehive. This is how it worked, where it fell short, and what happened at FSB Gold when the guns were lowered to fire point-blank.
