A book in hand, a solitary lamp
Moonlight fills half the window deep into the night
I read the words passed down through a thousand years
Yet every truth must still be lived, one step at a time
[Verse 1]
In youth, I asked the way to lofty heights
Only with white hair do I know that learning has no end
Bamboo shadows turn the pages, with the wind beside me
Plum blossoms perfume the inkstone beneath the moon
I do not seek to master all wisdom in a single night
I only wish my heart grows clearer with each dawn
However high the mountain, there is a path to climb
However distant the waters, the boat must sail its own way
[Pre-Chorus]
Through learning, we discover how vast the world can be
Through action, we discover what is true within the heart
Do not ask how many miles the road ahead may be
Each step, each footprint, reveals the spirit within
[Chorus]
Love of learning brings us close to wisdom
One lamp shines through the mist of ten thousand mountains
Putting goodness into action brings us close to benevolence
With every step and faithful heart, the world grows wide
Knowing shame brings us close to courage
Dare to ask your truest heart what is right and wrong
If you ask what I seek in this life
Let wisdom give me direction, and benevolence give me principles to uphold
And let courage give me the strength to act
[Verse 2]
We do not study for fame or fortune
Why should the written word seek fleeting renown?
If a single word can bring some good to the world
It is worth more than a thousand empty pages
Benevolence is not merely discussed in lofty halls
It lives within the smallest thoughts of everyday life
Leave a little warmth wherever you meet another
And spring will bloom within your own heart
There is no harm in turning back to face our mistakes
Only by knowing remorse can we cleanse the dust from our hearts
A true hero is not one who never makes mistakes
But one who admits past wrongs and begins the journey again
[Pre-Chorus]
The wise are not wise because they never have doubts
The benevolent are not benevolent because they never face hardship
The courageous are not those who have never known fear
They see the storm ahead—and still move forward
[Bridge — Xiao flute solo, drums gradually rising]
How many springs and autumns are granted to one life?
How many distant journeys can one lifetime hold?
You may read ten thousand books
Yet none surpass a heart that sees clearly
You may speak a thousand words
Yet none surpass putting them into action
Mountains and rivers silently watch those who come and go
The passing years silently question the heart
When all the splendor of life has finally faded
What will we leave behind in this world?
Through learning, let wisdom illuminate my long road
I will not fear the endless mist upon the mountains ahead
Through action, let benevolence take form and keep warmth within my heart
May I leave one beam of light in this world
From knowing shame comes courage—may I live this life without betraying it
Even after mistakes, turning back can bring another spring
After walking through wind and frost, I turn and look behind
I do not ask how much fame or glory I have gained—
I ask only whether this heart
Has lived without shame before Heaven and Earth
[Outro — Guqin]
Books may someday all be read
But learning can never end
The road may lead us far
But benevolence must never be forgotten
A person may grow old
But courage must never be lost
一燈
One lamp
一心
One heart
一生。
One lifetime.
Know—and then act.
Act—and then become.
One important nuance: 「好學近乎知,力行近乎仁,知恥近乎勇」 comes from the Confucian tradition and is especially powerful here. I translated 知 as wisdom, 仁 as benevolence, and 勇 as courage to preserve that classical philosophical meaning rather than using simpler words like “knowledge, kindness, bravery.”
