It's a lovely song for adult beginners, with a steady tick-tock rhythm that is easy to feel in your hands. THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG Henry Clay Work wrote My Grandfather's Clock in 1876. The story goes that he stayed at the George Hotel in Piercebridge, North Yorkshire. Two old brothers named Jenkins ran the hotel, and their floor clock kept perfect time for years. After the first brother died, the clock started running slow. When the second brother died at 90, it stopped and never ran again. In the song, a grandchild tells the story. The clock was bought the morning Grandfather was born. It stood in the room for 90 years and only needed winding once a week. It rang out when he brought his bride home, and it stopped short the moment he died. This song is also why we call these tall clocks "grandfather clocks" today.
