Before anyone climbed it, the mountain was just a shape the sailors used to find their way. Slogen rises out of Hjørundfjord like a drawn blade — 1,564 metres, straight from the water, a peak the fjord keeps for itself. For centuries it was only a landmark, a sharp white line the farmers and ferrymen looked up at but never thought to touch. Then, in the late eighteen hundreds, an English climber named William Cecil Slingsby came north and turned the shape into a goal — he wrote about it in a book he called Norway, the Northern Playground, and the country learned to climb because he climbed first. Years later a queen stood on the same summit, and the mountain took no notice at all.
