The lost footage of Metropolis (1927) was found in 2008 in Buenos Aires, on a scratched 16mm copy that had sat in a museum since 1992. Here's how it came back.
For 81 years, the world watched a Metropolis missing roughly a quarter of Fritz Lang's premiere cut. In this documentary we follow the Metropolis lost scenes from Berlin to Argentina, see what the 2010 restoration put back, and explain why the story felt broken for so long: a Paramount re-edit, a vanished character named Hel, and a German release that copied the American cut. Along the way: the real extras count, the Schüfftan mirror trick and the court fight over its copyright.
In this video:
1. How the lost reels survived in Buenos Aires
2. The three characters the cuts erased
3. The Hollywood loan that kept Ufa alive
4. Why Channing Pollock cut Hel from the American version
5. How Germany adopted the American cut, and Moroder's 1984 version
6. What Thea von Harbou's novel explains that the film doesn't
7. The New York skyline that inspired the city
8. The 36,000 extras claim vs. what Lang said
9. The Schüfftan process: giant sets made with mirrors
10. Why H.G. Wells called it "the silliest film"
11. Golan v. Holder and the road to the 2023 public domain
