Welcome back to Emberhollow - a small village out of time, and a place to rest. It is the night of the sixth of February, the first clear night since the blizzard. Every star is out, the snow is lying deep and hard under a frost, and the valley road below the bridge is drifted full to the tops of the hedges. Tomorrow the village goes down with shovels to dig it out, and the people who dig are fed at noon. So tonight, in the kitchen of the Winter Hare, the first of the inn's two smoked hams comes up from the cellar, and goes into a great oval kettle of cold water with a twist of sweet hay from the stable loft. A ham must never boil. For six hours it is kept just below it, the water only trembling, at the side of the range. Then it is left to cool in its own water, while the inn sleeps. Nothing bad happens in Emberhollow. Nothing startling, nothing sudden, no cliffhanger. It is safe to fall asleep at any point; you lose nothing, and the village will still be here tomorrow, exactly where you left it.
