Bureau of Reclamation engineers calculated that Hoover Dam's concrete, poured as one mass, would take 125 years to cool. The builders had about two. This is how they did it.
From the original 1930 design plans to the 1995 core tests: 215 interlocking columns, 582 miles of one-inch cooling pipe, an eight-foot slot left open through the dam, Milton Garland's two-stage refrigeration plant, and the grout that turned a stack of blocks into a single arch. Plus the detail most visitors miss inside the inspection galleries.
