In 1933, the engineers building Hoover Dam ran the numbers and found a problem nobody had faced before: if they poured the dam as one solid block, the concrete inside would still be cooling in the year 2058. It would crack long before then. This is the story of how they moved a river, hung men off the canyon walls on ropes, and solved the 125-year problem with an idea so simple it sounds like a trick: cut the dam into 215 columns and run cold water through 582 miles of pipe buried inside it. ⏱ CHAPTERS 0:00 A number that made no sense 1:27 The river that drowned a valley 3:57 The bid 6:00 Moving a river 8:39 The men on the ropes 11:12 The 125-year problem 15:34 Pouring a mountain 17:27 The price 18:51 Still standing 📚 SOURCES U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Hoover Dam history essays: Concrete and cooling: https://www.usbr.gov/lc/hooverdam/His... A wall against the ocean, a tunnel under a city, or a megaproject that was never finished? Tell me in the comments. #HooverDam #Engineering #History
