The O’Rourke’s of Bréifne were one of the leading dynasties of medieval Ireland. Ruling over the kingdom of Bréifne (much of modern-day Leitrim and Cavan) from early medieval times until the Cromwellian era in the 17th century, they were part of the Gaelic elite and dominated the development of Leitrim through the centuries. This is a short preview of three new videos launched to celebrate the legacy of the O’Rourke’s of Leitrim. Dr Kieran O’Conor tells us the fascinating history of Creevelea Friary, which was founded in 1508 by Eoghan O’Rourke; Frank Clinton tells the tragic story of Brian ‘Is Óige’ O’Rourke, the last O’Rourke; and Dave Swift of Claíomh demonstrates the weapons and armour that the O’Rourke’s would have used.
