Monitoring an early years learning environment is about more than checking that resources are available. This lesson explains how to observe children’s engagement, resource use and movement through the setting, then turn those observations into practical improvements. You’ll explore how to identify underused or overcrowded areas, improve accessibility and remove barriers for children with additional needs or sensory sensitivities. The lesson also covers regular checks for safety, cleanliness, maintenance and damaged equipment. It considers how inclusive resources can help children feel represented and valued, and how activities should support EYFS learning, individual milestones and next steps. Finally, you’ll look at adaptable spaces that can change with children’s interests and different types of play. Use the final mental checklist to review engagement, access, safety, inclusion, learning and adaptability in your own setting.
