Learn how to improve indoor and outdoor early years environments using a practical observation, action and outcome approach. This lesson explains how to identify what is not working, make a purposeful change and consider the benefit for children. It explores three examples: encouraging children to use a reading corner through comfortable seating, varied books and storytelling activities; improving accessibility in an art area with lower tables, adaptive tools and clear pathways; and making role-play more inclusive by providing resources that reflect diverse cultures, abilities and family structures. The lesson also considers common challenges, including limited budgets, time constraints, resistance to change and shifting children’s interests. You will see why improvements should be monitored over time and adapted in response to children’s participation and experiences. The focus throughout is on practical changes that support inclusion, engagement, literacy, confidence, belonging and imaginative play in an early years setting.
