Bennu: The Asteroid That Carried the Ingredients of Life

In 2023 NASA's OSIRIS-REx dropped 121.6 grams of asteroid Bennu into the Utah desert. Inside, scientists found amino acids, all five nucleobases, salty minerals and even the sugar ribose. Not life, but many of its ingredients. We follow the mission from Bennu's boulder-covered surface to the lab, explore the mirror-image puzzle of its amino acids, and look at a September 2026 study suggesting Bennu's parent body was born near the solar system's water ice line, with young Jupiter shaping the mix.
