Seeing the castle appear the moment you step out of the station is an unforgettable sight, and it's easy to understand why it has earned the nickname "The White Heron Castle." For lunch, I stopped at a wonderful restaurant near the castle and enjoyed a delicious set of zaru soba and anago-don (conger eel rice bowl). Eating while overlooking a peaceful traditional Japanese garden made the meal even more special and was one of the highlights of the day. Himeji is much more than just a famous castle. It's a city full of history, culture, beautiful scenery, and fantastic local food. If you're planning a trip to Japan, I highly recommend adding Himeji to your itinerary—you won't be disappointed.
