As one of Japan’s most historic cities, Kyoto welcomes Gion Matsuri, one of Japan’s three major festivals, with centuries-old traditions, rituals, and cultural performances. In Episode 6 of Japan Journey, I explore Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and experience the beauty of Kyoto’s Zen architecture and history. I also visit Yasaka Shrine, the heart of Gion Matsuri, where local people prepare for this thousand-year-old festival and traditional Japanese performing arts are presented on the shrine stage. From the golden reflection of Kinkaku-ji to the streets filled with festival preparations, this journey reveals a side of Kyoto beyond the famous tourist attractions — a city where history, faith, and everyday life continue together.
