The Olmec colossal heads share a monumental form, but their faces and headdresses differ. What can those details tell us about the people they were meant to represent?
This episode examines San Lorenzo Colossal Head 5, held at the Museo de Antropología de Xalapa, and compares its carved brow, eyes and mouth with its helmet-like headgear. We then follow the clues of ear ornaments, the basalt brought from the Tuxtla region, and the placement of heads at San Lorenzo and La Venta. The aim is to explain why many researchers read these monuments as portraits of important people, most often rulers, possibly linked to ancestral legitimacy.
The carvings offer clues about individuals and authority, while their personal names remain unresolved in the evidence discussed here. The episode supports a portrait and ruler interpretation, not an identification. Dates given describe specific objects or contexts, not every head. The seventeen colossal heads mentioned are the count published in these sources, not a new discovery.
