Teotihuacan’s Sealed Tunnel: Why Build an Underworld Beneath a Temple?

Why would anyone build an underworld beneath a temple? This episode investigates the sealed tunnel beneath the Feathered Serpent Temple at Teotihuacan, reached in 2003 and studied through radar, excavation, radiocarbon dating and material analysis. We follow the evidence from the first radar signals to the minerals, figures and deposited objects found inside, and ask how researchers move from materials and context to an interpretation. The ritual reading, which treats the tunnel as a representation of an underworld, rests on its construction, its deposited objects and symbolic interpretation. Specific ceremonies, participants and political purposes remain far less securely established.
