What did ancient humans eat before farming—and was the Stone Age diet really mostly meat?
From cooked fish and wild plants to shellfish and early bread, archaeology reveals a far more varied prehistoric menu.
What did our prehistoric ancestors actually eat to survive? Was meat the most important food? How did ancient humans recognize edible plants, prepare unfamiliar ingredients, and find food when the environment changed?
In this documentary, Before We Knew explores the archaeological evidence behind the ancient human diet.
Around 2.9 million years ago, early human relatives at Nyayanga in Kenya were using stone tools to process animal and plant materials. At Gesher Benot Ya'aqov in Israel, evidence suggests that human ancestors were cooking freshwater fish around 780,000 years ago.
At Border Cave in South Africa, researchers discovered charred underground plant foods dating back approximately 170,000 years. Neanderthal teeth preserve evidence of plant consumption, while discoveries at Pinnacle Point reveal early human use of coastal shellfish.
And long before established agriculture, hunter-gatherers at Ohalo II were processing wild grains. At Shubayqa 1 in Jordan, people were preparing bread-like food approximately 14,400 years ago.
Together, these discoveries challenge the idea of one universal prehistoric diet.
Ancient humans ate different foods depending on their environments, available resources, and accumulated knowledge. Their survival depended not just on finding food, but on learning how to prepare it and passing those skills between generations.
