What did ancient humans use before toilet paper, toothbrushes, shampoo and soap? Prehistoric humans faced the same basic problems we do — dirty teeth, body odour, lice, waste and the need to keep themselves clean — but almost none of our modern bathroom products existed. In this video, we explore what archaeology can actually tell us about prehistoric hygiene: ancient toilet habits, preserved coprolites, toothpick marks on Neanderthal teeth, lice and grooming, sharp stone tools, washing without soap, and why so much of an ancient daily routine disappears from the archaeological record. The surprising part is that prehistoric hygiene was probably less about products and more about behaviour. They could separate waste from living areas, clean between their teeth, wash dirt from their bodies, remove parasites, groom one another and use the materials available around them. The tools changed. The problems did not. If you enjoy archaeology, anthropology, human evolution and the strange everyday problems our ancestors had to solve, subscribe for more prehistoric human stories. The video specifically covers designated waste areas, ancient wiping evidence, toothpick-like grooves, grooming and lice, the limits of evidence for prehistoric shaving, washing without soap, and the distinction between modern hygiene products and much older hygiene behaviour. #AncientHumans #PrehistoricLife #HumanEvolution
