Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu is Nepal’s only international gateway, but its single runway has hosted an unusually wide range of aircraft. On the “biggest” end, TIA has recorded landings from wide-body jets like the Boeing 747-400 and Airbus A350, plus heavy military transports such as the Ilyushin Il-76 and the massive Antonov An-124 — most of these appearing during humanitarian relief operations (notably after the 2015 earthquake) rather than as scheduled service. On the smaller end, Nepal’s domestic aviation depends heavily on small STOL aircraft (like Twin Otters and similar light planes) that connect Kathmandu to remote mountain airstrips such as Lukla — making TIA one of the few airports in the world where jumbo jets and tiny bush planes share the same tarmac.
