On January 8, 1945, during the Battle of the Bulge, nine American soldiers faced an overwhelming German assault near Dahl, Luxembourg. Led by Sergeant Day G. Turner of the 319th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, the squad was ordered to defend a critical flank position. When devastating German artillery, mortar, and rocket fire forced them into a nearby farmhouse, what began as a defensive stand became a desperate four-hour battle for survival. German infantry, supported by tanks, breached the building and fought the Americans room by room. With one soldier killed and five wounded, Turner refused to surrender. He used burning oil to repel attackers, fought in brutal close-quarters combat, and kept his men fighting even after their ammunition ran out, forcing them to use captured German weapons. Against extraordinary odds, the battered American squad held its position until 25 German soldiers surrendered, leaving 11 German dead and numerous wounded. Only three Americans remained unwounded. Turner's extraordinary courage earned him the Medal of Honor, awarded posthumously after he was killed in action on February 8, 1945. Discover the remarkable true story of Sergeant Day G. Turner, the desperate farmhouse defense at Dahl, and one of the most extraordinary small-unit engagements of World War II. This WWII history documentary explores the Battle of the Bulge, American infantry tactics, the realities of house-to-house fighting, and how nine determined soldiers resisted a much larger German force in the freezing winter of 1945.
