On March 23, 1943, the German 10th Panzer Division attacked American positions near El Guettar, Tunisia, driving toward the artillery of the U.S. 1st Infantry Division. In their path stood the 601st Tank Destroyer Battalion and its lightly armored, open-topped M3 Gun Motor Carriages-75mm guns mounted on halftracks with limited traverse and little protection against German tank fire. This video follows the brutal fight at Wadi Keddab as the M3 crews struggled against Panzer IIIs and IVs, minefields disrupted the German advance, American field artillery hammered the attacking formations, and M10 tank destroyers reinforced the defense. The Battle of El Guettar showed how vulnerable weapons could still matter when combined with obstacles, artillery, infantry, logistics, and coordinated anti-tank fire to break the momentum of an armored assault.
