Today, we’re attempting to explore THREE historic British mining locations in a single day, hunting for some of the incredible mineral specimens that made these places famous. Our destinations: ⛏️ Middlehope Mine, Weardale – A legendary locality for British fluorite and other mineral specimens. ⛏️ West Rigg Open Cut – An extraordinary abandoned limestone quarry and former mining site, known for its impressive geology and mineralisation. ⛏️ Smallcleugh Mine, Nenthead – An extensive historic lead mine with a fascinating network of underground workings. Three locations. One very long day. Plenty of optimism. And absolutely bugger all to show for it.
