Could expanding the College Football Playoff to 24 teams completely change the future of conference realignment—and finally create a better path forward for West Virginia? I've spent years debating one major question: Will conference realignment dictate the College Football Playoff format, or will the playoff format dictate conference realignment? After two intriguing posts from college football media over the weekend, I'm increasingly convinced we could be approaching the latter. In this video, I explain why a 24-team playoff could change the financial and competitive incentives driving college football's biggest programs—and why that could create an opportunity for WVU. 🏈 IN THIS VIDEO: The 24-Team CFP Revolution: How an expanded playoff could change the way programs approach scheduling, conference membership, and the road to a national championship. The SEC and Big Ten Problem: Will college football's biggest brands continue accepting the punishment of bloated superconferences if multiple losses make their playoff paths more difficult? Notre Dame's Blueprint: If independence can provide a more favorable path to the playoff while preserving control over scheduling and media rights, could other major programs follow suit? Have We Reached Peak NIL? Are massive media-rights deals and record-setting booster spending worth it if one key injury can derail an entire season—or if a team can win eight or nine games and still miss the playoff? Why College Football Needs More Balance: Could smaller, more geographically sensible conferences create better rivalries, more meaningful games, and a more competitive national landscape? West Virginia's DREAM CONFERENCE: I revisit the vision Joe Paterno championed roughly 35 years ago for an eastern football conference built around regional rivals. Could that concept finally make sense again? Will College Football Abandon Rankings? If the sport evolves toward smaller conferences that operate more like NFL divisions, would we need a traditional national ranking system, or would a simple top-24 playoff field make more sense? 📊 THE BIGGER DEBATE: The financial arms race has transformed college football, but does bigger always mean better? If the sport continues moving toward a structure where the biggest brands seek the easiest possible route to the playoff, conference realignment could become the next major battleground. And I don't buy the argument that a team's record should be discounted simply because it plays in a supposedly tougher conference. An undefeated James Madison should always receive more respect than an 8–4 Texas. Winning games has to mean something. For West Virginia, a more balanced college football landscape could offer a path to greater relevance without having to win an arms race against the richest programs in the country. Is the future of college football a collection of bloated superconferences—or smaller, balanced leagues that make the regular season matter again? 👇 Let me know what you think in the comments! What would your dream conference look like for West Virginia, and would you support a return to the regional vision of the old Big East?
