WVU Football’s NIL Payroll REVEALED: Where West Virginia Ranks Nationally

How much is West Virginia football actually spending on its roster? A new report from The Athletic estimates the “payroll” for every team in the Power 4 plus Notre Dame — and West Virginia comes in tied for 50th nationally: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/inte... That number raises some fascinating questions about where WVU stands financially in the modern college football landscape. In this video, I break down WVU’s reported spending, where the Mountaineers appear to fall within the Big 12, and why the conference’s relatively low average spending matters when we talk about West Virginia’s place in the sport. I also discuss: • Why WVU’s reported spending puts the Mountaineers roughly in the Big 12’s 6th–8th range • Why the Big 12’s future revenues are so important to WVU’s future • The connection between the current WVU approach and the hiring of Rich Rodriguez • Why spending more doesn’t automatically produce wins — but why financial competitiveness matters • Why NIL and roster spending have fundamentally changed how we have to evaluate college football programs • What the proposed Protect College Sports Act could mean for the future of the sport • The potential implications of a 19-school conference membership cap and what that could mean for the ACC and college football realignment The biggest takeaway isn't simply whether WVU is spending enough. It's whether the Mountaineers can financially compete within a margin that gives them a realistic opportunity to consistently build winning teams. The Athletic's college football spending analysis is the jumping-off point — but this video is my perspective on what these numbers mean for West Virginia. What do YOU think?
