Reacting to Olivia Rodrigo - you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, and this album felt like falling in love while already knowing it might destroy you. It has the romance, the obsession, the sweetness, the anxiety, the heartbreak, and that classic Olivia Rodrigo honesty where even the prettiest moments still have something painful hiding underneath.
What stood out to me most is how different this album feels from her first two projects while still sounding very Olivia. SOUR had that raw heartbreak and GUTS had that messy, angry, pop-rock chaos, but this album feels more grown, more theatrical, and more emotionally complicated. It leans into love, but not in a perfect fairytale way. It feels like love that makes you nervous, love that takes over your mind, and love that leaves you questioning yourself.
The first stretch of the album really captures that rush of being deep in a relationship. Songs like “drop dead,” “stupid song,” “honeybee,” “maggots for brains,” and “u + me” have that feeling of being wrapped up in somebody so much that it becomes exciting and scary at the same time. Even when the songs feel bright or catchy, there is still this nervous energy underneath them.
Then the album starts to shift. “purple” feels like a turning point because it captures that feeling of losing yourself in somebody else. After that, songs like “the cure,” “begged,” “what’s wrong with me,” and “less” bring the emotional weight in a different way. The heartbreak here does not feel simple. It feels like trying to figure out why love did not fix everything, why wanting someone can feel so humiliating, and why a relationship ending can still leave you with so many unanswered feelings.
The sound of this album was also really interesting. There are moments that feel more ’80s-inspired, more new wave, more chamber-pop, and more experimental compared to what I expected.
The Robert Smith feature on “what’s wrong with me” was such a wild and fitting moment too. Having him on a song that already taps into that darker, more emotionally drained feeling gives the album another layer. It connects perfectly with the album’s whole idea of love feeling beautiful, overwhelming, and almost unhealthy at the same time.
Overall, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love felt like Olivia Rodrigo growing without losing what makes her special. This album still has the sharp writing, the emotional honesty, the dramatic moments, and the hooks, but it also feels like she is stepping into a more mature and layered version of her sound. It is sad, romantic, messy, funny, painful, and very human.
