Dr Horder's Room | A Forgotten Cambridge Ghost Story | Patrick Carleton

For centuries, young men were forbidden to occupy Dr Horder's rooms. Then the college authorities forgot why. At the ancient Cambridge College of Saints Cosmas and Damian, a young scholar is given rooms once occupied by the mysterious Dr Nicholas Horder—a sixteenth-century Master whose extraordinarily long life ended with a fatal fall down his own staircase. Soon the young man begins experiencing a recurring nightmare: a dreadful smell, the bedclothes being drawn back, and the sensation of something bending eagerly over him. But the explanation lies not in dreams, but in the college's forgotten history—and in something buried beneath the floor of its chapel. First published in Thrills in 1935, Dr Horder's Room by Patrick Carleton is a remarkably effective supernatural tale in the antiquarian tradition of M. R. James. Read by Christopher Halton for Haunted Tales of Darkness, where we seek out both the classics and those forgotten supernatural stories which deserve to be heard again. 0:18 - Introduction 1:23- Main Story 25:57 - Epilogue If you enjoy classic supernatural fiction, please like the video and subscribe. Haunted Tales of Darkness seeks out not only celebrated ghost stories, but also obscure authors and forgotten tales lost to history—and still worth hearing.
