20 Animals That Look Like They're From Another Planet and You Won't Believe They Exist | Animal Documentary In this Wild Dominion countdown we travel from the Americas to Europe, Africa, Asia, and the islands of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, ranking twenty creatures that seem to come from another planet, and closing on the largest land arthropod on Earth and the island where it has taken over the ground. We begin with a mouthless luna moth whose tails fool bat sonar, a caterpillar disguised first as a bird dropping and then as a snake, and a vinegaroon that fires vinegar at more than eighty percent acetic acid. We meet the Hercules beetle that changes color in the rain, a scorpionfly that courts with gifts of saliva, a stag beetle with antlers, a midwife toad father that carries his eggs on his legs, and a ribbed newt that pushes its own ribs through its skin. We follow a bat that hunts migrating birds, a jawless sea lamprey that invaded the Great Lakes, a goliath frog that builds pools, a bush baby with headlight eyes, and a bat-eared fox that listens for termites underground. We track a hamerkop that builds huts for half the animal kingdom, a devil's flower mantis, a hissing cockroach, a jewel wasp that turns cockroaches into zombies, a leaf insect, and a whip spider that strokes its young. And we land on the Chagos Islands, where a biologist counted a thousand coconut crabs and not one bird nest on the ground, and where a crab may even hold the secret of Amelia Earhart's disappearance.
