A man is dying on a Roman cross. With some of his final breaths, he stops to make sure his mother will have something to eat. To understand why, you have to go back a thousand years — to one Hebrew word almost every English Bible gets slightly wrong.
We translate it "honor." But the Hebrew word behind the fifth commandment — kabad — has almost nothing to do with politeness or good manners. At its root, it means weight. Mass. Substance. The very same word Israel used for the glory of God filling the tabernacle.
In this study, we trace that single word from Mount Sinai to a Galilean loophole to a dying man on a cross — and discover that "Honor your father and mother" was never a rule for children. It was a life-and-death command spoken to grown adults, about money, land, burial, and the care of the old. We'll look at what the Hebrew actually says, why Jesus put a price tag on the word "honor," how honor differs from obedience, what Scripture says about difficult and even dangerous parents — and one moment at the cross that changes how you read the whole commandment.
