When the GL “Top” Has a Masc Girlfriend: The Heteronormative Double Standard
So a Thai GL actress, Puinoon, who plays the top in Khom Khlang The Series, openly shared that she's been attracted to women and has had a girlfriend since high school.
And instead of simply celebrating a queer woman being open about her life, some people started calling her “fake” and “misleading” because her long-term partner is a masculine-presenting woman.
But WHY?
Playing the top does not automatically make you masculine. Being masculine-presenting doesn't automatically make you a top. And your onscreen role does NOT have to dictate your real-life relationship.
And here's another contradiction I noticed.
People will see an actress with a man and immediately say, “That's her boyfriend!”
But let two women be together and suddenly it's:
“Did they confirm it?”
“Are they actually dating?”
“Where's the proof?”
I'm not saying you should assume every woman and woman pairing is romantic.
I'm saying apply that same standard to heterosexual assumptions.
Because if heterosexuality is automatically presumed while queer relationships require confirmation, what assumption is operating underneath that?
And in Puinoon's case, her relationship with a woman reportedly existed before her GL career.
So why are we taking the character she plays NOW and running that backward over her real life?
Maybe the problem isn't that her sexuality doesn't make sense.
Maybe the problem is that people created a version of her that made sense to them—and her real life didn't follow the script. 🪶
