Giani Sant Singh Ji Maskeen tells the life of Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji — from his birth at Matte di Sarai in the Firozpur district to his passing at Khadur Sahib — and reads it as one continuous lesson in hukam. Born to a father who worshipped devi-devte and a mother, Mata Sabhrai, remembered for generosity and forbearance, Bhai Lehna Ji was travelling with his companions to the shrine of the goddess when he heard the words of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji from a devotee and turned his horse toward Kartarpur instead. Maskeen Ji lingers on the meeting on the road. Lehna Ji asks passer-by after passer-by where Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji the ascetic lives, and every one of them answers "further ahead" — which he turns into the teaching itself: the house of the Lord is always ahead, and consciousness turned forward reaches Prabhu while consciousness turned backward runs to possessions and the world. The traveller who finally takes his reins is Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji himself, and Maskeen Ji draws the conclusion plainly: whoever's reins Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji does not hold will struggle to reach his door, and he holds the reins of the one who asks with Lehna Ji's aching heart. The tests follow — the brass lota thrown into a mud-filled pool and retrieved without hesitation while the sahibzade decline; the frightening huntsman's guise, the stones and the staff that turned half the crowd back and then half of what remained; the sweets asked for from a jandh tree, where Bhai Lehna Ji answers Baba Sri Chand Ji that whether sweets fall or not is not his concern — obeying the Guru's hukam is his joy. Maskeen Ji notes the sharper truth in it: many people follow a saint under hardship and are stopped instead by comfort. Then comes the reversal the world could not believe — yesterday Lehna circled Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, today Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji circles Lehna and places his own head at his feet. The closing portion covers the years at Khadur Sahib: the propagation of the Gurmukhi script so that Gurbani could be read, taught and understood by the world; the langar expanded on a great scale, with Mata Khivi Ji's hand in it praised in the vaar of Satta and Balwand; the encounter with the fleeing emperor Humayun after his defeat by Sher Shah Suri, and the rebuke about drawing a sword on faqirs; and finally the passing into jyoti-jot at Khadur Sahib in Samvat 1609 Bikrami after blessing Sri Guru Amar Das Ji. The teaching he leaves with is raj-jog: do not break from the Nirankar for the sake of the world, and do not break from the world for the sake of the Nirankar — because the world too is His form.
